JULIA'S FATE

To Orwell Today,

hi,

What is the Party doctrine on Julia's kind of thinking, and how does her fate in the novel support that doctrine?

I wonder these two questions. Thankyou!!!!!!

Gary Yeung

Greetings Gary,

Theme 27.Goodthink explains pretty clearly how the Party wants people to think and behave and on the outside Julia puts on a pretty good show. And also the theme 26.Julia & Rebellion describes aspects of Julia's personality and her explanation to Winston of what she's really like inside.

Until she dropped the note in the hallway Winston thought Julia was just another Party worshipping woman, and he despised those kind of women. He was still married to one, although they'd been separated for years. He referred to his wife as "the human soundtrack" because her brain recorded everything she was told by the Ministry of Truth and repeated it back word for word. She didn't have an original thought in her brain and Winston despised her and all the other women who were like her. They'd all been brainwashed in the school system with sex-talks and police programs to snoop and spy on people who didn't think and do the same as them.

The answer to what the Party did to Julia for not thinking the way she was supposed to think can be found in theme 37.We Are The Dead and theme 45.Chestunt Tree Cafe.

There Orwell describes the black-booted thugs kicking in the glass and climbing through the window of Winston's and Julia's 31.Love Nest. They punch Julia in the stomach so hard she buckles over in agony and passes out. She is then picked up and hauled out like a sack of potatoes.

Years later - after he's been released from the 34.Ministry of Love, Winston bumps into Julia in a park and they sit side by side on a bench for awhile. She's as stiff as a board and cold as ice and her eyes are dead. She has a scar on her forehead where the Party obviously inflicted some damage during 40.Brainwashing. She tells Winston that she has no feelings for him whatsoever.

I hope that answers your questions about how the Party expected Julia to think and her fate for not thinking that way.
