COUNTING BIG BROTHER WAYS

To Orwell Today,

If you had to give 5 main points to what extent would you say that we live in the world of 1984 today?

-S. Webb

Greetings S. Webb,

Your question reminds me of that famous "let me count the ways" poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (with minor adaptations):

How Orwellian are we? Let me count the ways.
We are 1984 to the depth and breadth and height
Our souls have been breached, our feelings out of sight
To the end of our beings and ideal Grace.
I hate Big Brother reducing the level of everyday's
Most basic need, of sun, truth & light.
I hate BB freely, as men strive for Right;
I hate BB purely, and refuse him any Praise.
I hate BB with a passion put to use
In my new griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I hate BB with a hate I seem to gain.
He is no saint, --- I hate BB with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but hate BB better after death.

I hope that gives you some feeling for the extent to which we live in the world of "1984". For more tangible examples you should read the 45 themes listed down the left side of the "Orwell Today" home page and choose your own 5 from there.

All the best,
Jackie Jura
