To Orwell Today,
I'm a photojournalist and I'm doing a story about unforgettable people.
Yesterday I was in Islington and I came across Peter Powell. I was first given his name by Brian Bush at the news agent outside Angel tube, that led me to the Compton Arms where I bumped into Andrew Gardner who now does the walks Peter used to do.
I don't know if you can help, I've got the whole story but so far I don't have a picture of Peter. Do you have one you can send me and that I can use? I just need a head and shoulders or if you don't have that maybe a picture of him talking to a group of people.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
That's interesting you were in Islington yesterday and came upon the story of Peter Powell's Angel Walks.
I godcidently learned about Peter when I was doing a story about unforgettable people too - his next-door neighbor, George Orwell! See 27B CANONBURY SQUARE
That eventually led to meeting Peter in the Compton Arms and there's a photo of him there. That's Peter on the left wearing the light blue shirt and million-dollar smile. See ORWELL'S LOCAL PUB
It was five years later that Peter passed away. See ORWELL WALKS ANGEL POWELL
A memorial page was created and there are many photos of him conducting his "angel walks". See Peter Powell In Memory at http://www.angelwalks.co.uk
So glad to be of help, and please send along your story about Peter Powell to share with ORWELL TODAY readers.
All the best,
PS - If you're looking for a new photo-journalist assignment, perhaps you'd be interested in investigating and reporting on the theft of the Orwell plaque in Hampstead. It would be much appreciated to learn what's happening there. See ORWELL MEMORIAL MISSING FACE
