To Orwell Today,

Jackie, a couple of questions:

Thank you so much for this site. It's brilliant. I've been coming to it for years.

Anyway....

1) If not already on your site (I couldn't find them), can you add a section on "War" to include the following famous selection?

-War is the way to keep the people down.
-War is primarily waged by the government against it's own people.

2) Are you married? ;>)

- Jeff

Greetings Jeff,

Glad to have you as a regular reader!

I put "War" related articles and commentaries under theme 12.Ministry of Peace and that's where you'll find the Orwell quotes you're referring to:

"The war is waged by each ruling group against its own subjects, and the object of the war is not to make or prevent conquests of territory, but to keep the structure of society intact..."

"The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labour. War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent..."

And to answer your second question, yes, I am married, and my husband is becoming a very knowledgeable person in all things Orwell.

All the best,
Jackie Jura
