CYCLISTS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN

Here's a sad letter-to-the editor I read in the daily rag yesterday - Good Friday - which also coincides with Spring Break for the school kids. In my province, like in provinces and states all over America, the powers-that-be are closing off backcountry and crown land to public access or use. The only ones who can use it are Indians, Corporations and Environmentalists, not necessarily in that order.

You hardly ever see kids out on the street anymore playing street hockey, which just a generation ago, when MY kids were growing up, they played for hours. But then, my last child was born in 1982 and that was JUST when the video games started happening.

Now many kids are inside their houses addicted to violent computer games, and the powers-that-be seem to like it that way. And the government and police don't seem to be doing anything to stop the drugs and prostitution that are infesting most downtown cores. As a matter of fact, here in Canada, they hand out free needles for heroin and yet have do-gooders and cops sniffing everybody for tobacco and marijuana smoke. But that's another story.

What I'm talking about today - on this Easter weekend of 2005 - is that letter I mentioned above. Here it is. ~ Jackie Jura

CYCLISTS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN
Daily News, Mar 25, 2005

There was once a quiet place where no one was being disturbed and away from prying eyes, where dirt jumpers (a faction of mountain biking) could go and do their thing.

That all changed last week when the city brought machinery into the Valleyview dirt jump area where bikers have been going for years. In a couple of hours they destroyed what once represented hours of enjoyment for bikers, from those just learning to jump to the pros. Now we must find a new place where people won't have any objections. Again.
