SNOOPING HELICOPTERS & CAMERAS
Here's an email to Orwell Today:
Hi,
Brilliant site. Do you have anything on helicopters spying on community housing estates in England? Been over us for past year. Shone into block flats 2am. Whats their purpose?
RAYMOND W
Here's my response:
Brilliant question Raymond. Surveillance helicopters are the personification of Orwell. They are the personification of 1984. Listen to Winston describe them:
In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs,
hovered for an instant like a bluebottle,
and darted away again with a curving flight.
It was the police patrol, snooping in people's windows.
That's how far along the road to 1984 we've come that we've got bloody cops snooping in our windows night and day. No one says it better than the Brits - especially Orwell.
But to answer your question specifically, here's a fantastic website that is THE place to go for the facts about helicopters:
THE SKY HAS EYES and the history of VIDEO SURVEILLANCE IN ENGLAND
Then, on a personal note, a couple of years ago I wrote a poem entitled ODE TO FRUITLOOPS which is about what happened to me when, as a concerned citizen, I went before City Council to ask them if they were planning on installing surveillance cameras around town to go with their police helicopters and taser guns. To make a long story short, the Mayor accused me of trespassing on public property and told me to leave. When I refused he called the cops who duly arrived to escort me out. In the subsequent years the town has been terrorized by crime and surveillance cameras are going up everywhere. And the helicopter hovers overhead at night, chasing terrified teenagers into the park.
Thanks for your interest in Orwell.
