The above quote is taken from JFK's July 15th, 1960 acceptance speech to the Democratic Party after winning nomination as their presidential candidate for the upcoming November election. Further excerpts follow:

"...I think the American people expect more than cries of indignation and attack. The times are too grave, the challenge too urgent, the stakes too high to permit the customary passions of political debate. We are not here to curse the darkness, but to light a candle that can guide us....Today our concern must be with the future. For the world is changing. The old era is ending. The old ways will not do....The problems are not solved and the battles are not all won -- and we stand today on the edge of a New Frontier -- the frontier of the 1960s -- a frontier of unfulfilled hopes and threats....

"'Give me your help, your hand, your voice, your vote....'"

JFK seems to be saying that the sky, rain, oceans and tides could be used as weapons of destruction if they get into the hands of our enemies. He asks the people of America to help him fight those forces:

"We are not here to curse the darkness, but to light a candle that can guide us...Give me your help, your hand, your voice, your vote."

Four months later the people of America DID give JFK their vote and he became the 35th president of the United States and a New Frontier was on the horizon. At that time he again asked for help from the American people when he said, in his Inaugural Address:

"...The torch has been passed to a new generation.... To those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction....Let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors. Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths and encourage the arts and commerce....

"All this will not be finished in the first one hundred days. Nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days, nor in the life of this Administration, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin.... The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it, and the glow from that fire can truly light the world...."

But it was not to be. The candle JFK lit "to guide us" was snuffed out within "the first one thousand days" and the torch he handed to "the new generation of Americans" was torn from our collective hands.
