While he was president of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy donated his entire salary to charity*. He was someone, very much like Orwell, who lived his convictions. He genuinely cared for the poor and did everything in his power to increase the wages and improve the working conditions of the masses. As well, he did everything in his power to improve the lives and living conditions of poor nations throughout the world. His focus was to conduct domestic and foreign affairs in such a way as to "empower" individual citizens and the sovereign nations to stand on their own feet. His philosophy could be described as offering a hand-up, not a hand-out, and definitely not a hand-in-the-till like the corrupt politicians of today.

Attorney General Robert Kennedy donated his salary to charity as well.
