Re: U.S. Pound Hopes New Name For Pit Bulls Will Improve Dog's Violent Image, Jan. 12.

What is truly appalling about this story is the attempt to use language to mislead the public as to the nature of these vicious animals and to rebrand them as the animal equivalent of "freedom fries."

A pit bull is not a cute, if somewhat brash, "New Yorkie." It is a creature kept to intimidate others, justly known for spasms of sudden, brutal violence against people and animals whose only misdeed is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If pit bulls really require rebranding, call them what they are: terrierists.
