To Orwell Today,
re: Email discussion on Harry Potter
I am a Pastor from Canon City, CO. You are sitting here talking about a book that is just a book. In the following passage you say that this and that are signs of evil, that a snake is always evil:
"I'll admit that I am not at all familiar with the books having read only one of them after seeing the movie (the first one). I did see some symbolism there, ie Harry communicating with the snake (which I took to represent evil). Him releasing it from its cage didn't seem like a very good thing to do as most people (Muggles) are instinctively afraid of boa-constrictors. There is no doubt about it that the book was loaded with other symbolism but I am sure that most young people who read the books don't understand it, which is good, as long as it doesn't sneak into their consciousness subliminally. I hope you continue to enjoy them as nothing more than light reading."
I am apalled that you, the all knowing adult, didn't pay attention to the book. He had troubles controling his "power," that means that he accidently made the glass go away. Just like how in the 3rd book he loses his temper because of the way his aunt acts. Now don't say he is evil because he lost his temper and she "Blew up" aka Expanded like a balloon. She was tormenting the poor child by downgrading everyone he has ever loved, and how he lost them. Saying that his Dad was a drunk, and talking about how bad blood makes bad blood. I would like to see what you read and how it can be interprutted by a person who has no understanding, at all, about the way people write books.
I don't see you sitting here writing about all of the books about Vampires having sex, and killing their partners. I see no references to any of Steven King's books. But you have the nerve to take a book that lets the small child in the back of the room feel less unusual. A book that helps some of the mentally disabled children here imagine about how magic could be, about how they could do anything, about how they could be close to anyone they love without feeling like "the retard."
By the way, Witches in Harry Potter are not like the vile creatures that ARE witches. Witches are women who have sex with the devil in order to break the rule of free will, the rule that no one at all (including God), can force someone to do something entirely. That does not include threatning, threatning can't force everyone. By the way I see NO referance to Satan at all through out any of the books.
May God Save you from Hell,
Father James Vaughn
