BLUE WILLOW POEM DOWN UNDER
To Orwell Today,
I'm from Australia and this is how my Mother taught the Blue Willow pattern poem to me, I like it much better:
TWO LITTLE BLUEBIRDS FLYING HIGH
CHINESE VESSEL SAILING BY
BRIDGE WITH THREE MEN, IF NOT FOUR
WEEPING WILLOW BENDING ORR
CHINESE TEMPLE THERE IT STANDS
SEE THE WORK OF MANY HANDS
PLUM TREE WITH PLUMS ON
CROOKED PALING ALL ALONG

Greetings John,
Thanks for your contribution from Down Under -- but to my ears I prefer my English grandmother's version:
TWO BIRDS FLYING HIGH
A LITTLE SHIP SAILING BY
A CHINESE CASTLE HERE IT STANDS
FACING MANY MANY LANDS
A LITTLE BRIDGE WITH THREE MEN ON
A WILLOW TREE -- THAT ENDS MY SONG
It seems everyone who's written in over the years remembers a different version of the Blue Willow poem -- and everyone prefers the one they were 'raised on'. It's definitely a poem that brings back lasting memories.
All the best,
