To Orwell Today,
re: UNCLE SAM SAYS POW DESERTED
The article is very good except I think there is one mistake, that it was Bush. It was LBJ.
"The military publication Stars and Stripes carried a wire service report on Jan. 19, 1965, which said Jenkins had been leading a four-man patrol in a wooded area near the DMZ when he disappeared. The Pentagon says he defected; relatives claim he may have been kidnapped and brainwashed, and have been petitioning President Bush to pardon him."

Greetings Larry,
Yes, LBJ was president when POW Jenkins was first captured by the North Koreans in 1965. But 39 years later - in 2004 - it was Bush Jr (Shrub) who was president, and it was Bush's government denying him a pardon, accusing him of being a deserter, not a prisoner. Bush's Secretary of State, Colin Powell, wanted him extradited to the USA to face charges.
I don't know what eventually happened with the case, having not followed-up on the story since it came out nearly six years ago (it now being 2010). I just now did a quick google and found a Wikipedia article on Charles Jenkins and it seems he is living in Japan and has written a book about his experiences in North Korea.
All the best,
