QUEST FOR SIRHAN HYPNOTIST

To Orwell Today,

Hi,

I came across your website during some research on W J Bryan and am hoping you might be able to give me some leads. Here is the webpage: MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE MOVIES and below is the text:

"...Just hours after [Robert Kennedy's] assassination, famed hypnotist Dr. William Joseph Bryan was on the Ray Briem show for KABC radio, and mentioned offhandedly that Sirhan was likely operating under some form of posthypnotic suggestion...Bryan, by his own account, had been the "chief of all medical survival training for the United States Air Force, which meant the brainwashing section." He also "claimed to have been a consultant for the film The Manchurian Candidate, based on Richard Condon’s famous novel about a man who is captured by Communists and hypnotically programmed to return to the United States to kill a political leader. Condon’s novel was itself based upon the CIA's ARTICHOKE program, which sought to find a way to create a programmed, amnesiac assassin. ARTICHOKE became MKULTRA. Bryan bragged to prostitutes that he had performed "special projects" for the CIA, and that "he had programmed Sirhan"...After seeing the movie Conspiracy Theory, many people wondered if MKULTRA was indeed a real government program. Yes, Virginia, there was a sinister mind control program in which people were made to undergo hideous, obscene mental and physical tortures in the CIA’s quest for a way "to create a Manchurian Candidate". It should be noted that Allen Dulles, Richard Helms, and surprisingly, the Rockefeller Foundation were instrumental in developing, supporting and funding the CIA’s various mind control programs...." I am working on W J Bryan as part of some other historical research into sciences of mind and memory and see that you somehow know about a radio interview he did shortly after the Kennedy assassination. Can you tell me if there is a way of hearing this? reading a transcript? reading about it somehow? And/or other sources of information about Bryan?

Greetings Alison,

Aside from that article quoted above, I came across information about W J Bryan in the 1993 book THE ASSASSINATION OF ROBERT F. KENNEDY: THE CONSPIRACY AND COVER-UP, by Willian Turner and John Christian:

RFK Assassination Book

On page 206-207 of that book, it says:

RFK Bryan 206/7

"...In Richard Condon's novel THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, anti-hero Raymond Shaw's captors in North Korea brainwash him and program him through hypnosis to act as a 'hit man'....Then, upon receiving instructions, he kills without any later remembrance of having done so....The late Dr William Joseph Bryan, Jr, who had a hypnotherapy practice in Hollywood and was technical adviser on the filming of The Manchurian Candidate, declared in his book Legal Aspects of Hypnosis [published in 1958 by Charles C. Thomas Co, Springfield, Illinois]: "It is impossible by means of hypnosis to force a subject to commit an act which violates his basic moral code."....But as the annals of crime attest, a person's inherent reluctance to commit a crime can be overriden by conditioning him to believe that the act he is performing is in the interest of a high moral purpose. A civilian conscript who has never harmed a fly will kill the enemy in wartime in the interest of protecting his country and family, and hypnotic subjects can be inculcated with the same type of lofty imperative..."[end quoting]

Bryan is also mentioned elsewhere in the book where he cites himself as "the leading expert in the world on the use of hypnosis in crimanl law", and he was often called-upon by the Los Angeles Police Department to perform hypnotism on their suspects. Bryan's biggest claim to fame, and about which he bragged all the time, was how he'd hypnotized and deprogrammed the Boston Strangler, allegedly Albert Di Salvo, for prosecutor F. Lee Bailey (of O J Simspon fame in Los Angeles 30 years later).

Bryan's hypnotism of the Boston Strangler (who thereafter confessed to the crime) actually links Bryan to the assassination of Robert Kennedy because, under hypnosis, Sirhan Sirhan robotically wrote in his notebook "God help me . . . please help me. Salvo Di Di Salvo Die S Salvo."

This mention of the Boston Strangler by Sirhan Sirhan was so out of character (and how would a Palestinian immigrant in Los Angeles know about the Boston case, let alone Di Salvo's name?) that it's surmised he heard the name while under hypnotism (and Bryan, being fixated on the Boston Strangler, is thereby implicated as Sirhan's hypnotist/mind-controller/programmer).

It's suspicious, too - this Bryan connection to Boston - in that JFK and RFK were Boston's most famous sons (even down to the Beacon Hill neighbourhood where the stranglings occurred).

Beacon Hill, Massachusetts (...a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, covering approximately one square mile (2.6 km²) and home to about 10,000 people....The neighborhood is named for the location of a former beacon atop the highest point in central Boston, once located just behind the current site of the Massachusetts State House...)

JFK Boston Walking Tour (...Beacon Street: Underneath the distinctive golden dome of the Massachusetts State House, which sits atop historic Beacon Hill, is a bronze statue of a youthful JFK in mid-stride, hand in his suit jacket pocket. The statue is in front of the west wing of the State House....Bowdoin Street: This building located adjacent to the State House looks nondescript from the outside, but apartment 36 served as JFK's registered voting address and headquarters for his congressional campaign...)

The Boston Strangler Controversy (Between June 14, 1962 and January 4, 1964, thirteen single women in the Boston area were victims of either a single serial killer or possibly several killers. At least eleven of these murders were popularly known as the victims of the Boston Strangler... Even though nobody has ever officially been on trial as the Boston Strangler, the public believed that Albert DeSalvo, who confessed in detail to each of the eleven "official" Strangler murders, as well as two others, was the murderer. However, at the time that DeSalvo confessed, most people who knew him personally did not believe him capable of the vicious crimes and today there is a persuasive case to be made that DeSalvo wasn't the killer after all....)

Bryan had originally said, when interviewed on a Los Angeles radio show (no transcript mentioned) just hours after RFK was shot, that the person who did it "must have been under post-hypnotic suggestion". See SIRHAN SIRHAN MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE.

Later, Bryan - no doubt realizing this could connect HIM to the hypnotized shooter - retracted his opinion that Sirhan Sirhan had been hypnotized and denied he'd ever met him.

Below are excerpts from pages 224-229 from THE ASSASSINATION OF ROBERT F KENNEDY that mention W J Bryan. You can click on the images to enlarge for reading in context in its entirety:

RFK Bryan 225

Our quest for Sirhan's programmer had been no more successful than the search for Amelia Earhart until Dr. Herbert Spiegel gave us a lead. Anything mentioned in the presence of a subject under hypnosis is automatically etched into his mind, especially if it comes from the hypnotist. And it might flow out at any time.

This brought us back to the notebooks containing Sirhan's "automatic writing." Could he have scrawled something during a trance regression that the hypnotist had mentioned while programming him? There was a passage that stood out because it was unlike the others, having nothing to do with horses, politics, money or past acquaintances. It read: "God help me . . . please help me. Salvo Di Di Salvo Die S Salvo." The reference apparently was to Albert Di Salvo, the notorious Boston Strangler. That case had been cracked by the use of hypnotism, and the hypnotist was Dr. William Joseph Bryan, Jr., of Los Angeles. Bryan billed himself as "probably the leading expert in the world" on the use of hypnosis in criminal law, and often boasted about being called into baffling cases by law enforcement agencies, including the LAPD. The Boston Strangler case was his tour de force, and he was incessantly mentioning it.

An imposing man with a wrestler's girth, Bryan claimed he was once drummer with the Tommy Dorsey band and a commercial airplane pilot. During the Korean War he had put his hypnotic skills to use as, in his words, "chief of all medical survival training for the United States Air Force, which meant the brainwashing section.

RFK Bryan 226/7

After the war he reportedly became a CIA consultant in the Agency's experimentation with mind control and behaviour modification. Refused membership in all traditional medical societes, Bryan set up a medical and hypnotherapy practice on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood which he named the American Institute of Hypnosis. He used it as an aegis for wide-ranging symposiums on such topics as "Successful Treatments of Sexual Disorders". I enjoy variety and I like to get to know people on a deep emotional level," he once told a magazine interviewer. "One way of getting to know people is through intercourse". In 1969 the California Board of Medical Examiners found him guilty of unprofessional conduct for sexually molesting four women patients who submitted under hypnosis.

Despite his advocacy of sexual freedom, Bryan was a Bible-quoting fundamentalist who belonged to a fire-and-brimstone sect called the Old Roman Catholic Church, which broke away from the Vatican over a century ago....[Curiously, David W. Ferrie, a prime suspect in New Orleans DA Jim Garrison's 1967 probe into the John Kennedy assassination, also belonged to this small sect. Ferrie was found dead on February 22, 1967, shortly after being interrogated.]

Only hours after the RFK shooting and before Sirhan had been identified, Bryan appeared on the Los Angeles radio program of Ray Briem (KABC) and offhandedly commented that the suspect probably acted under posthypnotic suggestion. Two years later, when Bryan appeared on another local radio program, Christian called in and asked him about his prescient analysis on the Briem show. At first Bryan hedged, then declared that he had no professional opinion because he had not personally examined Sirhan. He quickly switched the subject to the Hollywood Strangler case in which a Henry Bush was executed for murder. "He utilized self-hypnosis," Bryan asserted, noting that Bush once tried to burn off his own arm with cigarettes under self-hypnosis "to get rid of the offending part - just like the old thing in the Bible, you know: 'If the left hand offend thee, cut if off!'"

When we asked Sirhan about the Di Salvo entry in his notebook, he replied that the name was entirely foreign to him. Was it possible that Bryan had placed Sirhan in a trance state and, given his propensity to boast constantly about the Boston Strangler case, repeated Di Salvo's name over and over - thus etching it into Sirhan's subconscious? In any case, Sirhan would not remember either the circumstances of his exposure to the name or who mentioned it.

Since Bryan's ego seemed boundless, it was possible that an interviw with him would produce the unexpected. It did. On June 18, 1974, Betsy Langman, a disarmingly attractive New York writer with whom we had been comparing notes, talked to Bryan in his Sunset Strip office suite on the pretext of doing a general article on hypnosis. The doctor went on at length about his standing in the field of hypnosis ("I am probably the leading expert in the world") and abilities ("I can hypnotize everybody in this office in less than five minutes"), detailed his successes with Henry Bush and Albert Di Salvo, and ventured opinions on various aspects of hypnosis. But when Langman, who had been researching the possibililty of assassination through mind control, asked "Do you feel that Sirhan could have been self-hypnotized?," his expansiveness vanished. "I'm not going to comment on that case," Bryan said curtly, "because I didn't hypnotize him." When Langman explained that she simply wanted his opinion, Bryan exploded. "You are going around trying to find some more ammunition to put out that same old crap," he said, "that people can be hypnotized into doing all these weird things." He charged out of his office, snapping, "This interview is over!"

Shaken by the angry outburst, Langman went across the street for coffee accompanied by a sympathetic secretary. Langman was in for another shock. According to the secretary, Bryan had received an emergency call from Laurel, Maryland, only minutes after George Wallace was shot. The call somehow concerned the shooting. (Governor Wallace was shot and badly injured on May 15, 1972, at Laurel while campaigning for the presidency; his assailant was Arthur Bremer.)

RFK Bryan 228/9

In the spring of 1977 Bryan was found dead in a Las Vegas motel room, "from natural causes," the coroner said. (Curiously this word was issued before the official autopsy.) Shortly thereafter we were put in contact with two Beverly Hills call girls who claim to have known Bryan intimately. They had been "servicing" him on an average of twice a week for four years, they said, and usually were present at the same time. During the last year of his life, they said, he was deeply depressed....He became strung out on drugs, and his groin and thighs were pocked with bruises from hypodermic needles. (No mention of these marks appeared on the coroner's report.)

The girls said that to relieve Bryan's depression they repeatedly titillated his enormous ego by getting him to "talk about all the famous people you've hypnotized." As if by rote Bryan would begin with his role of deprogramming Albert Di Salvo in the Boston Strangler case for F. Lee Bailey, then boast that he had hypnotized Sirhan Sirhan. The girls didn't sense anything unusual in the Sirhan angle, for Bryan had told them many times the he "worked with the LAPD" on murder cases, and they didn't know that he had absolutely no contact with Sirhan following the assassination. One of the girls thought that Bryan had mentioned James Earl Ray once, but wasn't sure. But both girls were certain of the name Sirhan Sirhan.

[In October 1977 the LAPD was awarded a $10,000 grant from the American Express Company for "pioneer work in developing hypnosis as an investigative technique". It has been established that Ray, while residing in Los Angeles immediately prior to the King assassination, did consult with a hypnotist named Xavier Von Koss.]

The call girls also linked Byran to the CIA... According to the girls, Bryan repeatedly confided that he was not only a CIA agent but involved in "top secret projects".... Upon Bryan's death his offices were sealed off to newsmen by his estate's probate lawyer, John Miner (who had also helped prosecute Sirhan as a deputy DA). There remains the question of Bryan's claimed hypnotist-subject relationship with Sirhan, and what role his connection with the CIA might have played in it." [end quoting]. See slso DID CIA KILL RFK?

I hope that helps in your quest for information on W J Bryan and the sciences of mind and memory.

All the best,
Jackie Jura

PS - Amazingly, in today's news, there's a story about a Canadian scientist developing a device to read minds. It's another fulfillment of Orwell's warning in "1984" where he said BIG BROTHER was "trying to discover, against his will, what another human being was thinking". It's something they've been working on for a long time. See THINKING INSIDE YOUR SKULL

Canadians invent infra-red mind-reading ray. Tech Radar, Feb 10, 2009 (...In a study published this month in The Journal of Neural Engineering, Bloorview scientists reveal how a headband fitted with IR fibre-optics can pick up thoughts and preferences. The headband emits light into the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, while the hapless subject is asked to make a mental choice between two alternatives....TechRadar envisions a future where Canadians rule the world with an iron fist, probing a terrified global population with brain-scans to seek out and mind-wipe anyone who thinks a bad thought about Celine Dion. Whoops.)

PPS - In a related mind-control topic, there's another coincidence I've noticed about the Robert Kennedy assassination that can be added to people related to the making of the MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE MOVIE, as was the case with its director, John Frankenheim (who drove Bobby to his death at the Los Angeles hotel). See FRANKENHEIMER'S JFK/LBJ MOVIES.

This time it's to do with the name of THE MANCHURIAN CANDADIDATE producer - George AXELROD - being the same last name as Obama's publicity agent, David AXELROD. He, in his own way, is a mind-controller - but of public opinion - working for political parties and corporations pushing their product.

The secret side of David Axelrod, Business Week, Mar 14, 2008 (David Axelrod has long been known for his political magic. Through his AKP & D Message & Media consultancy, the campaign veteran has advised a succession of Democratic candidates since 1985, and he's now chief strategist for Senator Barack Obama's bid for President. But on the down low, Axelrod moonlights in the private sector. From the same address in Chicago's River North neighborhood, Axelrod operates a second business, ASK Public Strategies, that discreetly plots strategy and advertising campaigns for corporate clients to tilt public opinion their way.... ASK's predilection for operating in the shadows shows up in its work. On behalf of ComEd and Comcast, the firm helped set up front organizations that were listed as sponsors of public-issue ads. Industry insiders call such practices "Astroturfing," a reference to manufacturing grassroots support. Alderman Brendan Reilly of the 42nd Ward, who has been battling the Children's Museum's relocation plans, describes ASK as "the gold standard in Astroturf organizing. This is an emerging industry, and ASK has made a name for itself in shaping public opinion and manufacturing public support...."A lot of what is done to shape public opinion in political life can be applied to public affairs for corporations....)

Alexrod's success in "shaping" public opinion, in the case of Obama, can be seen in the mindless way in which people in the USA and all over the world - who know absolutely nothing about him - have bought into the idea that he's the best thing since sliced-bread - and even compare him to JFK, to whom he has absolutely NOTHING in common. Axelrod's PR firm has marketed Obama to the masses the same way he's marketed the products of corporations he works for. For months now Obama's face has been on the front covers of magazines and it's the first thing you see when you walk into a 7-11 or the cash register of grocery stores where magazines hit you in the face while you wait to pay for whatever you came in to buy.

I've personally done an experiment of asking people what they think of Obama (I'm Canadian living in Canada) and 99% of the time they say "he's the only hope for change". Then I ask them to tell me what they know about him, his policies, or his background and they tell me, without any embarassment, that they know "absolutely NOTHING about him". Then when I say "well then why do you think he's such a great guy?" they tell me it's because "he'll make changes" - which, of course, is nothing but a repetition of what they've heard on TV, radio, newspapers, magazines etc etc since his name first appeared on the radar screen two years ago. It really is a form of mass mind control. See OBAMA HEADING US INTO ABYSS

To Orwell Today,

Hi, I am very very grateful for the quick help. When I have everything written up I'll send you my chapter -- he is part of a chapter on forensic hypnosis, which has a little bit on the Manchurian Candidate film and theories of mental programming during the 1960s.

Alison
