Five years after the assassination of his brother - President John Fitzgerald Kennedy - Robert Francis Kennedy was running for President of the United States when he too was assassinated. His death, like his brother's, was blamed on "a lone gunman" and that, to the non-conspiracy-minded public, was the end of the story. But it wasn't really the end, at least not to those of us who don't close the book until we get to the last page - and that has yet to be arrived at. A review board in California has again denied parole for Sirhan Sirhan, the man convicted of assassinating Senator Robert Kennedy in 1968. The board said Wednesday he can be considered again for parole in five years. The Associated Press newswire reports Sirhan expressed "deep regret," but also said he did not remember shooting Kennedy, who was a presidential candidate at the time. The 66-year-old Arab immigrant is serving life in prison for shooting Senator Kennedy in a Los Angeles hotel moments after Kennedy gave his victory speech in the 1968 California Democratic primary election.

...Sirhan argued before the board that he should be granted release this time around because he was part of a conspiracy and was brainwashed, his lawyer, William Pepper, told ABC News. While he says he knows the identities of other conspirators, he is not yet prepared to name names, Pepper added. "There is no question he was hypno-programmed," Pepper said. Pepper became well-known for his efforts to prove that James Earl Ray, the convicted assassin of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., was framed by federal and local law enforcement in a conspiracy with organized crime figures. They also presented evaluations from two respected psychologists who said that if he is released, Sirhan does not present any danger to the community. Sirhan has used the mind-control defense before, in 2003, when his previous lawyer, Lawrence Teeter, argued before the board that Sirhan was hypnotized by the Central Intelligence Agency on the night that Kennedy was shot....

...Sirhan, a 24-year-old Palestinian, cried "I did it for my country" when arrested. He kept diaries detailing his hatred of Kennedy for promising military support for Israel, a year after the region's Six-Day War. Yet Sirhan's lawyer claims he was programmed to shoot the politician while under hypnosis. Bill Pepper, the New York attorney who will today lead Sirhan's 14th attempt to be given parole, improbably alleges his client was "hypno-programmed". "Sirhan was put through a process involving hypnosis and chemicals," claimed Mr Pepper, who is also a qualified barrister in England and Wales. "Someone, some group or some agency did this," he said. Asked if he meant that the US government was responsible, Mr Pepper said: "Perhaps". Despite the fact his client was watched and apprehended by numerous bystanders, Mr Pepper also believes the conspiracy theory that there was a "second gunman" in the hotel. "We know Sirhan did not shoot the lethal bullets," he told The Daily Telegraph. "Witnesses said he was standing in the wrong place. He was there only as a distraction."....In addition to maintaining that he did not even kill Kennedy, both Sirhan and Mr Pepper also say that he has "no recollection" of the incident. Mr Pepper, who was chairman of Kennedy's "citizens' committee" in 1964, said he was hopeful ahead of the hearing....
