To Orwell Today,
re: 1984 help!

We are studying 1984 in relation to

-  today's US democracy of the post 9/11 team of Bush/Cheney/Rice/Gonzalez

-  1984 in relation to the USA Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Act

-  when you see the word 'Orwellian" what do you think?

Any way you can help me out? articles, your two cents, ANYTHING but if not thank you for your time.

Greetings Topher,

Your plaintive cry for help reminds me of the old Beatles song "H E L P, I NEED somebody, not just anybody, please He-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-l-l-l-l-l-lp!"

So how can I resist?

Firstly, the USA is no longer a democracy (which implies representative government) because the politicians and their elections are as rigged as slot machines. In other words "they" can tell us "Daffy Duck" won the election and we'd have to believe it. (actually, we WOULD believe it).

For example, in the first four names you cite above, ie "Bush/Cheney/Rice/Gonzales" only ONE person was supposedly "elected" by the people, ie the first one. The other three were APPOINTED by the first one (otherwise known as Shrub). And you probably know next to nothing about the backgrounds of the latter three but if you did I assure you, you wouldn't want them in any position of power over you or your fellow citizens because they are (in my opinion) members of the Brotherhood and their allegience is not to the United States (or any other country) but to BIG BROTHER, the evil organization that rules the world.

For your second question I have a section entitled TERROR BILL IS TERROR which explains how the 9/11 event was merely an excuse to set up corrupt organizations like "Homeland Security" which is an Orwellian term that in reality means "Homeland INsecurity" because our own governments are using the police and military against the citizenry, who have done nothing wrong, in the name of "keeping us safe" (ie secure). In other words, the wolf is devouring the sheep in the name of keeping the sheep safe from the wolf. And when you see the term "Patriot Act" reverse its meaning and think "Traitor Act" on the part of the government (the Party) for their treasonous acts against the citizenry and the nation.

The word "Orwellian" means anything in present-day society that was described by Orwell in "1984". In that book Orwell talked about helicopters snooping in our windows, and police and the Party (government) spying on us through cameras and microphones in the cities and in the countryside and how they watched us even in our own homes through the "telescreen" which is Orwell's word for "television". The "speakwrite" that Winston talked into at his place of work (the Ministry of Truth which was really about LIES) was his word for the "internet". Those are just a few Orwellian examples but there are many, many more, ie the 45 themes I've listed on the left side of the home page of Orwell Today.

Hope that H E L P s!

All the best,
Jackie Jura
