TWAIN QUOTE NOT

Earlier I shared a snotty-toned email I'd received from someone claiming that Mark Twain was the author of "The Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling" upon which was based "Euro English" by Author Unknown.

Another reader has now written to say that "snot" is wrong about Mark Twain and gives credit where credit is due:

To Orwell Today
re "Euro English":

Just a quick note, of a non-snotty variety...

Until I saw this, I'd never seen it attributed to anyone other than "anon". As for the version that is claimed to be Twain's... in "proper books" made of paper with pages to turn, it's attributed to a letter that appeared in the Economist, written by someone called MJ Shields.

A Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling

Found that. So, you should generally feel free to send an email back to the accuser, telling him to go drown himself. :)
