To Orwell Today,
re: BYE, BYE AMERICAN PIE and BYE, BYE APPLE PIE

SO SORRY to disappoint you, but the song AMERICAN PIE is about the death of Buddy Holly. "The Day The Music Died" is February 3, 1959, when Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash after a concert. Mclean was a paper boy during the time hence the lines in the song.

Go to the SONG FACTS website for the real story. Sorry to disappoint you on the whole nuclear thing.

Greetings Hannah,

I agree (and have always agreed) that the AMERICAN PIE lyrics do fit the death of Buddy Holly et al and the status-quo meanings you and many others have forwarded from various websites.

But the lyrics ALSO fit my interpretation, which I arrived at through original thinking, and which I point out line-by-line, including "the whole nuclear thing" you so disparage.

All the best,
