VICTORY DAY UN-VICTORY

When you see the cozy relationship between the Communist World and the Democratic World in the Victory in Europe (V-E) Day celebrations, especially those being held in MOSCOW, of all places, Orwell's meaning of the word "Victory" comes pounding home.

Victory Mansions, Victory Gin, Victory Cigarettes - and in Canada a new Victory Coin - have nothing to do with victory in the true sense of the word. For example, the nickel used to make Canada's new 5-cent coin is being sold to Communist China.

Obviously, words with VICTORY in front of them should not be taken at face value. In reality, they are the OTHER side of the coin, the UNDERside, ie the UNvictory side.

But getting back to "Victory in Europe" Day. Describing the arrival of the Soviet Union into Europe as LIBERATING is Orwellian to the extreme. For example, after Germany unconditionally surrendered and the war ended, the Red Army (Stalin's army) slaughtered and raped women and children all over Germany for months. German men, women and children were thrown into concentration camps and starved to death by the millions.

DARK SIDE OF RED ARMY'S LIBERATION OF GERMANY and NOT JUST GERMANY GUILTY

In the closing days of WWII - as a correspondent in Europe for the Observer newspaper - Orwell was disgusted by the cruelty he saw the Americans, British and Soviets inflict upon the Germans. And he was shocked at the physical destruction of Germany caused by the bombs that had been dropped by the Allies. None of Orwell's reports that he sent back to the Observer or the Guardian have ever been published for some reason. They were probably surpressed because they spoke too much truth, just like his writings from his observations of the Spanish Civil War had been suppressed.

One of the most Orwellian things about World War Two is the fact about Poland.

Supposedly it is because Germany invaded Poland in 1939 that Britain entered the war. The allies then joined Britain to help SAVE Poland's sovereignty. And yet after six years of war, which Germany lost, Britain handed Poland to the Soviet Union, the brutal Communist regime Germany had warred against. From a Polish point of view being taken over by Russia was WORSE than being taken over by Germany.

So whose victory is Victory Day in Eurpoe all about? I guess it's about the Victory of the Capitalists with the Communists, the only ones who profited. Everyone else lost. It's no victory for the ordinary people of any of the countries involved, ie the people who gave their blood, sweat and tears.

The celebrations that are occuring all over Europe this 60th V-E Day are being conducted under the most oppressive and totalitarian of conditions ever seen in our lifetimes. The streets have been cleared of all people (the great unwashed) while "Leaders" - such as Bush and Putin - strut along like tin-pot dictators surrounded by Military and Police thugs armed to the teeth with weapons so powerful they put new meaning to the term "overkill". And they're all aimed at innocent, law-abiding citizens who are everywhere deemed a terrorist threat to government.

And that's how they celebrate VICTORY day? Orwell would call it UN-Victory day.

This past June, 2004, was the 101st anniversary of the birth of George Orwell. How coincidental that practices he described taking place in Room 101 (and which previously happened only in Communist countries started happening in so-called Democratic countries too.

What we really need is Democratic Socialism as aspired to by Orwell. Now that really WOULD be victory and something to celebrate. ~ Jackie Jura
