On the morning of September 11, 2001, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, was speaking in New York at the opening of the UN General Assembly. He reminded the gathering that this was the 20th anniversary of the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE, a day of world-wide peace and goodwill.

He was just about to lead a moment of silence in the name of peace when the first jet struck the north tower of the World Trade Center.
