With the money rolling in from who-knows-where these Soviet gangsters have been buying up prime real estate and businesses in the Western World - particularly in England where they even own London's professional soccer team.

The old adage "as ridiculous as taking coals to Newcastle" reached personification a few years ago when England's greatest coal-mining area lay fallow while coal from the USSR was shipped up the River Tyne to fuel a foreign-owned aluminium smelter. See RUSSIAN COAL TO NEWCASTLE

Now in today's news one of England's major newspapers casually reports on another Soviet takeover:

Russia's Gazprom aims for a slice of E.ON's British power plants. Times, Aug 10, 2007 (...The move would be the Kremlin-backed Gazprom's biggest step in the UK market so far and would fuel fears about the security of future energy supplies....British politicians would face calls to resist a deal, given the pressure from Russian regulators that has forced both BP and Shell to cede control of key projects in Russia in the past year...)

The way the self-appointed elite of the USSR are welcomed in the Western World (under the pretext that "communism is dead - long live democracy") and are allowed to buy up our resources - with little negative comment from the mainstream press - is a travesty of untold dimensions.

Several years ago I came across the Russian vodka ad pictured at the top of the page and recognized the symbolism. Notice the wolf in the bottle surrounded by sheep which are unalarmed at him in their midst. As long as the sheep get their vodka (the taste of which is infamous for being undetectable when mixed with other liquids) they have no fear of the wolf. It would be better for the sheep to drink vodka straight and 'on the rocks' - that way they'd know it for what it is - and maybe they'd come to their senses before their freedom and lives are also 'on the rocks'. ~ Jackie Jura

LONDON: About a decade ago, Mikhail Gorbachev starred in a television ad for Pizza Hut, which praised America for delivering the benefits of capitalism to his country. Now he is trading in fast food for fine leather, appearing in an international print ad campaign for Louis Vuitton. The move upmarket by Gorbachev comes amid some big shifts in the geopolitics of the luxury business. Wealthy Russians are now heading west, and their spending makes up a growing slice of the luxury pie. Pietro Beccari, director of marketing at Louis Vuitton, said the goal of the new campaign was to broaden the appeal of the brand, particularly in relatively new markets like Russia and China....Gorbachev wears a pinstriped suit and a heavy overcoat, with a Vuitton bag placed casually on the back seat of a Khrushchev-era Soviet limousine, driving along a remnant of the Berlin Wall....Beccari and Sicouri declined to say how much Louis Vuitton was spending on the new campaign, or how much Gorbachev and the others featured were paid. Beccari said Gorbachev was initially reluctant to participate, but he was persuaded when Louis Vuitton made a donation to his environmental charity, Green Cross International, which is cited in the ad. The other ads mention support for Al Gore's Climate Project. Beccari said Gorbachev had also chosen the backdrop for the photo, a wall that Ronald Reagan once challenged him to tear down.
